What It's Like to Emerge From a Cult, with Gerette Buglion

The MultiPod is now also on video! You can watch today's episode on YouTube here.---Our guest today shares her experience of being 18 years in a cult, and finally getting out of it, which has led her to helping others escape and recover as well. Gerette Buglion is the founder of "Living Cult-Free," a non-profit organization that helps survivors and those close to them emerge from the experience of being in a cult. She also hosts a podcast of the same name, and the producer of that podcast happens to be our own Vanessa Hennessey! Vanessa joins us as well to talk about her perspective putting stories together for the podcast, and making sure they are told in an honest, authentic and delicate way.Cults are something far more common than you might think, and they take on all shapes and sizes. It's not just your stereotypical 'retreat from society, eat and dress the same way, follow the leader' stuff. Most cults in fact don't realize they are one. As you can imagine, it's very subversive. But Gerette has a very succinct and profound way of describing it: "A cult, or any authoritarian system, is based around the concept that they know and understand you better than you know yourself." They, or typically the leader, think you should trust them more than you trust yourself. And that marks the difference between a cult and a genuinely positive, healthy and empathetic group or individual: in a cult, the leader is looking out for their own interests and gain, typically money and power. In a healthy and supportive system, if there even is a leader, they are helping you on your journey of personal growth and understanding, with no personal gain to themselves beyond being happy for you. It's a fascinating topic that we just start to scratch the surface of, but of course there is the podcast where you can learn much more, and hear some profound personal stories. So check out Living Cult Free, the podcast, and if this is a topic that particularly speaks to you, be sure to reach out to Gerette, she would love to have that conversation. How to Contact Gerettegerettebuglion.com - Gerette's website. Tell the Story Behind the Thing you Cherish, with Martie McNabb

The MultiPod is now also on video! You can watch today's episode on YouTube here.---Martie McNabb is my guest today, someone whom i think a lot of our viewers and listeners know, and not just virtually but in person!Martie is great at getting out to some of the big events over the years that bring people together, including Camp Indie and the Everything Conference of 2024. I was fortunate to see her at both, and then we even met up again about three weeks after the everything conference on her way back to Vermont from a conference in Montreal.I love when things work out and people can make a detour for a visit, something I always try to do too if I'm travelling. And connection, community and sharing is the theme of our conversation today. Martie has developed this wonderful idea of people sharing quick, heartfelt stories based around an item of personal significance, often from a loved one or from a poignant memory. It's called Show and Tale, and Martie uses it to bring people together for anything from team-building events to family reunions or break-the-ice workshops. Ideally it's done in person, but virtually is an option too, and to that end Show and Tale has a counterpart in Martie's fabulous podcast, "Things that Matter."Things that Matter is more of a one on one conversation, podcast-style, but again with that focus on sharing the stories and memories behind an object. Remember in the days before digital? Letters in the mail, printed photographs, pen and notebook, ticket stubs and physical maps - Show and Tale takes us back to that emphasis on real, tactile things that we can hold in our hand, that have a scent and texture, and that in turn remind us of a person, a place or an experience. It's a really neat idea. Martie tells us all about it here today, and go check out Things That Matter on YouTube or your favourite podcast app to hear more great stories and inspiration. How to Contact MartieThings That Matter podcastShow and Tales YouTube channelShow and Tale websiteSend an email: (info at showandtales.com)Martie on:Instagram (@showandtales)Facebook (@martie.mcnabb)LinkedIn (@martiemcnabb)---Find The MultiPod around the internet!Visit our new website, www.themultipod.com, for more show info, and our entire archive of 111 full episodes, plus bonus episodes and the Everything Conference miniseries. We also have a new guest application form, where you can send in your ideas for topics and who you would like to meet, and we'll set a recording date!Meanwhile, I'll be posting clips and updated on Instagram, @tedcraggpodcastingAnd, The MultiPod now has a sponsor!Quick Edit PodcastsYes, this is my own podcast production business. When Letting Go leads to Magnificent Adventures, with Eric Larson

The MultiPod is now also on video! You can watch today's episode on YouTube here.---Your kids are getting older, moved out or soon to do so, you're divorced and setting up a new life with a new partner. Moving across the continent, and to a new country, no less. You're entering a phase of life full of opportunity, flexibility, change, excitement and a pile of unknowns. So many options for a multipotentialite! Where to begin?Eric Larson's answer is to follow his heart, his instinct and his nose. He embarked a year ago on a journey without many definitive objectives or benchmarks, an entirely new season of life with different commitments and responsibilities. For someone so used to caregiving and community, it's a particularly big change. But Eric is embracing it with calm perspective and an open mind. Eric quotes Brené Brown in referring to, as opposed to a "crisis," a "midlife unraveling" - a time for undoing many of the things that defined the most recent phase of life, and building something new. It's just that in his case, he's not exactly sure where it will lead him, and what the journey will be like. He's keeping an open mind, not focusing on specific goals, and concentrating on just being in the moment.Eric's new life in Montréal, Québec is all about sharing observations and forging new connections, in a new language and culture as well. We chat about Québécois French and honouring a language, and how he copes with isolation and distance, while slowly easing into his partner Dan's life and her family. If you are in a similar phase in life, particularly with kids moving on and a massive change in routine and responsibility; or if you've experienced this already, or can see it coming in the near future: reach out to Eric with your thoughts and perspectives. He would love to hear from you, and compare notes. In particular, subscribe to his Substack newsletter, "The Rogue Learner," and watch the journey unfold! How to Contact EricEric on:Substack (@theroguelearner)LinkedIn (@efslarson)---Find The MultiPod around the internet!Visit our new website, www.themultipod.com, for more show info, and our entire archive of 111 full episodes, plus bonus episodes and the Everything Conference miniseries. Honouring the Cycle of Seasons in Life, with Charlotte Petit Noble

The MultiPod is now also on video! You can watch today's episode on YouTube here.---Charlotte Petit Noble is an entrepreneurial mother and breastfeeding advocate, originally from France but living in the Los Angeles area for about 15 years.Charlotte's multipotentialite journey includes experiences in marketing, hairstyling and podcasting, before leading to her current focus on supporting breastfeeding mothers through her Instagram and coaching programs, "Breastfeeding by Design." With two young kids of her own now, this latest business idea makes a lot of sense, and helps Charlotte lean into coaching and educating others, something she's passionate about. However, after years of pursuing successful projects, only to see her interests change and motivation wane, will it be any different this time? Charlotte talks about how her perspective on passions, commitments and priorities has itself changed and evolved over the past year or so. North Star Journaling for Profound Change, with Ross

The MultiPod is now also on video! You can watch today's episode on YouTube here.---My friend Ross joins us today to share his remarkable journey, particularly in the past year, of reasserting control over his health and sense of self. The catalyst for these transformative changes: journaling. Ross has been a regular journaler for a few years, but leaning into it more recently has had an immense and positive impact on his health, mindset, and overall life balance. Ross developed his own journaling system, called "North Star Journaling," which gives structure and guidance, without a firm set of inflexible rules. Something perfect for multipotentialites who need to adapt and pivot from time to time.Ross is here today to share the story of those profound changes, almost a new lease on life. It's powerful and inspiring stuff, and if you're feeling in a rut, stuck or otherwise discouraged, Ross' story will give you inspiration and encouragement. We each forge our own path in life, but we can look to the examples of others to help us along the way. When I set about relaunching The MultiPod under its new format, I knew that Ross was the first guest I wanted on the show. We first met three years ago, and immediately I recognized him as a deeply genuine, real and authentic person, who loves connecting with others. A great example therefore as we embark on the new intentionality of this show.Reach out and talk to Ross about journaling, weight loss, health and mindfulness, and more! How to Contact RossRoss is building out new online profiles, under the handle "@RossYVR604", with a particular emphasis on Substack. It's something I've been stewing on for months, and in true multipotentialite fashion, it needed to find its time and place to become reality. Now, the moment feels right and I'm glad to be back underway.I will always be thankful to the Puttyverse and Joel Zaslovsky for the tremendous support and encouragement since we started the podcast in January of 2018. Although The MultiPod now shifts away from the Putty umbrella to become something independent and standalone, there will always be strong links and connections to the community. Just not in a formal way. Thank you to Joel for your support in this new direction. The MultiPod has always intentionally been a team effort, since Day 1, and so it is a strange yet exciting feeling to bring it under a more personalized banner. But my thanks to the many people who have contributed over the past 7+ years: the many guests, guest-hosts, and of course our founding team, Sandrine, Michael and Sara. But particularly, thanks to Vanessa Hennessey who has been the steady and joyful co-host for so many years. Vanessa will still be around I'm sure, we hope to hear your voice again in an episode whenever it works out.
